New York Notary Public Licensing Exammination Instructions / Locations / Schedules
NY Notary Public Licensing Exam Procedures have changed during the emergency in 2020.
All written examinations have resumed as of July 2020.
Exams are administered by appointment only durring the emergency.
You will need to see the NY Notary exam schedule and email the state for an appointment during the emergency. We suggest you arrive early to get all cheked-in so that you can use thr rest room and not feel rushed right before the exam starts. Please see the schedule below to determine the most convenient location, date and time for you to take any upcoming exam. Exam schedules are published only 1 month in advance during the emergency. You can take the exam whenever you want as many times as you want to become a NY State Notary Public. Our NYS Notary Associaton approved course students gailing the exam the first time at a rate of only 1%. Anyone who fails and has purchased an approved NYS Notary Association exam preparation course, is given a free course to repeat until they succeed! That has been less than 1% whereas we have estimated that the exam failure rate without a course is over 60%.
Seats are limited and assigned on a first-come/first-served basis. WARNING: If you are not on time ...you will be locked out of the testing.
Thwe state requires you to arrive to youe exam appointment no later than 15 minutes before the start. We reccomend being 30 minutes early.
What To Bring
- A form of government issued signature identification which must be photo-bearing. Your identification MUST BE CURRENT (not expired) and from the following list:
- driver's license from any state in U.S.
- state issued identification (ex. non-driver ID)
- U.S. military ID
- United States Passport
- United States INS/Immigration ID
- Certificates of US citizenship
- Foreign Passports for Permanent resident Alien Status
- IDNYC (NYC Resident ID card)
- Brazilian, Mexican or Ecuadorian Consular ID
- $15 examination fee. You may pay by check or money order made payable to the Department of State or charge the fee to MasterCard or Visa. Cash not allowed. Fee is not refundable. A $20 fee for bounced checks and exam invalidated.
Test Center Policies
You must bring two #2 lead pencils to the exam.
Thumb printed has been discontinued. Before you sit down to begin the 40 question, multiple choice exam, turn off your Cellular phone, beeper and any other electronic devices or you can be thrown out the exam. Dictionaries, books, other reference materials, big bags, knap sacks and briefcases are not allowed at the test center. Do not bring these materials to the test center as there is no place to store them.
Don't use food and beverages or smoke in the exam. They are not permitted at the test center. If you bring food or beverages, you will be ordered to throw them in the garbge pail.
Visitors, guests and children are not allowed into the testing center with the exam participants. Any person caught cheating by using cheat sheets, personal notes, study guides, or any other aids; giving or receiving help with other exam participants; taking examination materials or notes about the exam from the test center; disrupting the exam or causing disturnaces or engaging in any practices against the rules of proper examination manners will be ejected from the test with no refund. Any decisions regarding further potential disciplinary actions can be made by the Exam Supervisor at the Department of State, Division of Licensing services.
Score Reporting
You need to score 70% of the questions correctly in order to pass the exam and get licensed just 1 time in your life. It is a lifetime commission renewable every four years for life. Results are reported as either passed or failed; so be advised you will not get a numerical score. the results are mailed out and received as quickly as 1 week or more which varies.
You will be notified by mail as soon as your exam results are available. Results are not given over the phone, so please do not call Licensing Services for them.
When you passed the NY Notary public written exam, you will receive a notice in the mail. That original notice must be submitted with your application form, license fee, etc. (Complete application details are provided in the application form instructions.) So keep a copy of the original before you mail it back in.
For those who might fail the written exam, they can always retake the written exam on another date and time of their choice.
YOU HAVE 2 YEARS TO USE YOUR NOTARY EXAM PASSED SLIP TO GET LICENSED. Your Oath of Office for the first
4 years of your lifetime Notary Public Commission must be notarrized and returned with the $60, 4 years licensing fee to
the New York Department of State.
About the Exam
Exam topics include: New York State Notary Public Licenscing Law, general terms and other information related to the duties and functions of a NY State Notary Public, as outlined in the "Notary Public License Law" booklet available from the Division of Licensing Services. This is also refered to on the exam as the, "Public Officer's Law".
Applicants will be allowed 1 hour to complete the test. It has 40 multiple choice Notary Licensing Law questions.
The allotted time begins at the conclusion of the instructions. You need to score 70% (28 correct) to pass.
NYS Notary Association students report finishing in 10-20 minutes after taking the NY Notary exam prep classes.
