New York State Notary Association · Volunteer service since 2001

How to become a Notary Public in New York State

The association is a volunteer service: a free newsletter, refresher training videos, and law updates the state does not send — so licensed notaries stay out of trouble. To earn the commission, Notary Training & Supplies Inc (the association’s chosen vendor) recorded the live hotel-room class on award-winning adult education software so you get the exact same training at home: stop, pause, repeat, and resume as long as you need, plus hundreds of practice exam questions. $77 NYS exam prep for basic in-person notarizing. $78 Remote Online Notary (RON) / electronic notary after that — no second state exam, and 10% off the software New York requires for approval.

Free repeat if you fail (NY slip required) — fewer than 1% use it. Call (347) 427-9091.

For commissioned notaries

New York does not send you the updates. We do.

Once you hold a commission, the Department of State is done teaching. Procedure changes, fee mistakes, and journal rules still land on your desk. The New York State Notary Association is volunteer-run so licensed notaries get a free newsletter, refresher videos, and law updates that keep them out of trouble — not a sales pitch.

Two classes. One sequence.

Start with the license. Add remote work after the commission arrives.

Step 1 · NYS exam prep

Basic in-person notary — $77

The only state exam is this one: 40 questions on New York’s Notary Public License Law. Same live-class training, delivered on award-winning adult education software so you can pause and repeat at home. Hundreds of practice exam questions. Sit when you are ready.

Step 2 · After you pass

RON / electronic notary — $78

Prerequisite: the $77 licensing exam. There is no second state exam for Remote Online Notary. Register, run a remote session, charge up to $25 an act. Class includes 10% off the RON software New York requires for approval.

The actual sequence

How New Yorkers get commissioned

  1. 01

    Study New York’s law

Not a class written for every state. The 40-question exam is New York’s booklet: venue, fees, official character, Sunday rules, misconduct.

  2. 02

    Sit the state exam

Walk-in and scheduled dates are posted by the Department of State. Students who finish this class typically need 15–20 minutes of the hour.

  3. 03

File $60 and order a stamp

After the pass slip, apply through NY Business Express. Then buy the journal New York has required since 2023, plus the stamp you will actually use.

Instructor

Mike Brown

B.S. Occupational Education, Southern Illinois University · M.S. Administration, Central Michigan University

Founder of the New York State Notary Association since 2001, a volunteer service for licensed New York notaries. Paid classes and supplies are delivered through Notary Training & Supplies Inc, the association’s chosen vendor. Before the classroom he was a senior claims representative and investigator for The Hartford and Aetna in New York, then trial prep manager and investigations supervisor at a New York law firm on the 9/11 sick rescue workers class action. U.S. Navy veteran. That background is why the class uses workplace examples instead of a five-hour recitation of the booklet.

He taught live five-hour seminars across the state that students rated 5. The $77 class is that same room on award-winning adult education software: stop, pause, repeat, and resume as long as you need, with hundreds of practice exam questions. ESL students use the replay. Lawyers and legislators use it to save a Saturday. When New York authorized Remote Online Notary in 2023, the $78 RON / electronic notary class was added as the upgrade after the $77 exam prep — not a replacement, and not a second state exam. That class includes 10% off the RON software New York requires for approval.

This is New York’s exam. All 62 counties.

Those “how to be a notary” videos made for the whole country fail people in every New York county because the test asks New York questions. Plattsburgh uses the same booklet as Long Island. We mapped the class to that fact.

I took your class last month and I just wanted to thank you a million times. I took the test on January 23 and I passed it with flying colors. I don't think I would have passed without your help. During the test I just kept hearing your voice.

60-second check

Can you sit the New York notary exam?

The Department of State writes the rules. This is a private screening so you do not buy a class you cannot use. Attorneys and qualifying court clerks skip the exam but still apply.

  1. 1.Are you at least 18 years old?

  2. 2.Do you live in New York, or keep an office or place of business here?

  3. 3.Do you have a Social Security number and unexpired government photo ID?

Questions before you pay

NYS Notary Association · Est. 2001

The exam is 40 questions. The delay is usually studying.

Start tonight. Sit when the Department of State has a seat. Order the stamp after the pass slip.
