Is the NYS Notary Association the New York Department of State?

No. The New York State Notary Association is a volunteer service — not a government office. The Department of State, Division of Licensing Services writes the exam, collects the $15 testing fee, and issues the four-year commission. Paid classes and supplies are sold by Notary Training & Supplies Inc, the association’s chosen vendor.

Does New York require a notary course before the exam?

The statute does not require a prep class. It also fails a large share of walk-ins who treated the License Law as optional reading. More than 70% of people who self-study do not pass. Attorneys admitted in New York and qualifying Unified Court System clerks skip the exam and still file the $60 application.

What score do I need on the New York notary exam?

Accepted Answer

Forty multiple-choice questions. One hour. Seventy percent — 28 correct — is a pass. Students who finish this class typically use 15–20 minutes of that hour. Results arrive by mail in about one to three weeks.

What if I fail the New York exam?

Sit within six months of finishing the class and send the failed notification from the state. We repeat the class at no charge. Fewer than one percent of students have used that guarantee. We do not refund after access begins because the recordings and PDFs have already been delivered.

Can lawyers or legislators become New York notaries?

Yes. New York lets attorneys and state legislators hold notary as an additional public office. Attorneys skip the exam; legislators sit the same 40 questions as everyone else. Both use the class to get through the License Law without a hotel-ballroom Saturday.

Yes. Phone, tablet, or computer. Stop, pause, repeat, resume. After you pay, the login email usually arrives within ten minutes — check spam. Your email is the user ID; you set the password.

Is there a New York State exam for Remote Online Notary?

No. The only state exam is the 40-question test for the basic, in-person notary commission. RON — also called electronic notary — is a registration after you already hold that commission. This $78 class is procedures and software, not a second exam prep.

Do I need the $77 licensing class first?

Yes if you are not yet a New York notary. Pass the 40-question exam, file the $60 traditional commission, then take the $78 RON / electronic notary class. The basic class is the prerequisite. You cannot skip it.

Is Remote Online Notary the same as an electronic notary in New York?

New York law uses both names for the same registration. When the signer is not in the room, the electronic act is remote online notarization. Remote ink-signed notarization ended in January 2023. There is no extra exam under either name.

How much can a NY electronic notary charge?

Up to $25 per electronic notarial act, including each act inside a single session. A certificate of authenticity — papering out a tangible copy of the electronic record — is $2. Traditional in-person oaths and acknowledgments remain $2 unless another statute sets a different amount.

You stay at a computer inside New York, under New York law. The signer can be anywhere in the United States or another country. The room is no longer the limit; the state line still is — for you.

No. You pick a commercially available platform that meets Department of State minimums so your electronic-notary application can be approved. You are responsible for identity proofing, the audio-visual recording, and the backup. The $78 class includes a 10% discount on that required RON software.

New York will not approve you as an electronic notary without a compliant RON platform. After the $78 class, Notary Training & Supplies Inc gives you 10% off that required software. It is not a software subscription bundled into tuition — it is a discount on the platform you still have to have.

Who may sit the New York notary exam in 2026?

You must be at least 18, live in New York or keep an office or place of business here, and have a Social Security number plus unexpired government photo ID. Citizenship is not the test. Lawful permanent residents are not automatically barred.

What if I have a felony?

A disqualifying conviction under the License Law can block a commission. A Certificate of Good Conduct can remove some barriers. If your record is complicated, ask a lawyer — not a web form and not a training company.
