New York law uses both names: Remote Online Notary (RON) and electronic notary. Same registration. This $78 class is only after the $77 NYS exam-prep class and your traditional commission. No second state exam

The 40-question Department of State exam is only for the basic, in-person commission. Remote Online Notary is a registration after you already hold that license. This class is the filing and the software — not another sit-down.

You stay at a computer inside New York, under New York law. The signer can be anywhere in the U.S. or another country. Charge up to $25 an electronic act versus $2 on most paper oaths.

New York will not approve you without a compliant RON platform. The $78 class includes 10% off that software. Tuition is not a software subscription — the discount is how you buy the tool the state requires.

How to become a remote online notary in New York

  1. Hold a traditional NY Notary Public commission. That means the $77 NYS exam-prep class (if you still need it), the 40-question exam, and the $60 application. There is no extra exam after that for RON.
  2. Complete this $78 RON / electronic notary procedures class.
  3. Apply as an Electronic Notary on NY Business Express. Upload a new oath of office and pay the $60 fee.
  4. Submit an electronic exemplar — a digitized handwritten signature and seal, not a typed name — plus your digital-credential provider.
  5. Pick a commercially available RON platform that meets DOS minimums. New York does not certify vendors. This class includes 10% off the software required for approval.
  6. Keep a journal of every notarial act for ten years. Electronic sessions also need the audio-visual file and a backup.
