Why people sit the exam
A New York notary commission is a public office, not a weekend certificate.
Some students need it to keep a job. Some want a mobile practice. Some are lawyers adding an office the statute already allows. The $77 class is the same License Law for all of them.
A four-year public office with a low filing fee
$15 to sit, $60 to file, four years on the wall. New York does not charge a CE tuition because it does not require continuing education. The risk is a procedure change you never hear about — which is why the monthly association video rides with the class.
Paper fees are small; remote fees are not
Most in-person oaths and acknowledgments are $2. After you hold an electronic commission, a remote act can be $25. That is why the $78 RON class exists as step two, not as a substitute for the license.
Mobile work after hours
Hospital visits, kitchen-table real estate, and after-hours loan packets. A pocket stamp and a journal in the bag is a side income that does not need a storefront. New York has required that journal since 2023.
Attorneys and legislators already have a path
The License Law lets both hold notary as an additional public office. Attorneys skip the exam; legislators sit it. Both use the recording because a Saturday in a hotel is a waste of a calendar they do not have.
The commission works in every county
Qualify in Suffolk, take an acknowledgment in Erie. The county on the license is qualification, not a fence. You still have to be physically in New York to perform a New York act, including a remote one.
None of this requires a national notary course. New York asks New York questions. If the reason you want the commission is a job, an extra public office, or a $25 remote act later, start with the license class — then decide on electronic registration after the pass slip.
